About Busoga University: A New Dawn for Higher Education in Eastern Uganda
Welcome to Busoga University, an institution charting an exciting new course in the heart of Eastern Uganda. Our story is one of vision, resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to providing academic excellence and fostering community development .
Our Foundation
The vision for Busoga University was born from a profound desire to serve the community. On 23rd February 1993, the Board of Governors of Busoga College Mwiri passed a resolution to establish a university on the same hill, requesting the Busoga Diocesan Council and the House of Bishops to become its foundation body .
This vision materialized over the following years. A University Formation Task Force was appointed in 1994 to map out the process, and on 6th May 1995, the university was inaugurated in the presence of His Royal Highness the Kyabazinga of Busoga, Henry Wako Muloki . Following the surrender of land and buildings by the Busoga Diocese, the university received its interim license and officially opened its gates to students on 12th February 1999 . Affiliated with the Anglican Church of Uganda, our motto, “Center of Academic Excellence,” has guided our mission from the very start .
A New Chapter: The Transition to a Public University
After a period of closure, Busoga University is now entering a transformative new era. In a historic move, the Church of Uganda officially handed over the university’s assets and liabilities to the Ministry of Education and Sports on December 17, 2024 . This pivotal transition, led by the First Lady and Minister of Education, Janet Museveni, marks the beginning of our journey as a public institution .
This transition is more than a change in ownership; it is a renewed commitment to serving the people of Uganda. The government has appointed an interim task force to swiftly effect the activities of the institution, with plans for renovation and a full reopening anticipated in the near future . This marks a new chapter for Busoga University as a public entity, dedicated to expanding educational access and driving regional development .
